Once a lithium ion cell&#8217;s internal temperature crosses a critical threshold, the reaction becomes self sustaining, with each stage of breakdown releasing more heat and gas than the last. Left unchecked, this chain reaction can escalate to cell venting, fire, and propagation to neighbouring cells within minutes.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why temperature alone comes too late<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>By the time a temperature sensor registers a meaningful rise, battery thermal runaway is often already well underway. Volatile organic compounds are released as the electrolyte begins to decompose earlier in the failure sequence, well before temperature change becomes significant. This is the physical basis for Metis Engineering&#8217;s Cell Guard sensor, which monitors VOCs, pressure change, humidity, dew point and, optionally, hydrogen and shock loading from inside the battery pack itself.<\/p>\n<p>Most battery management systems today are built around temperature thresholds because temperature is straightforward to measure and has long been the default. Recognising the gap between familiar and earliest is what has driven the industry toward gas sensing as a complementary layer rather than a replacement for temperature monitoring.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Independent validation of earlier detection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sandia National Laboratories independently validated Cell Guard&#8217;s ability to detect thermal runaway in electric vehicles faster than other methods using VOC detection, with findings published in the Journal of the Electrochemical Society. Hydrogen detection serves as a useful secondary indicator in this process too, since it tends to appear later in the cell venting sequence, providing an additional layer of confirmation once VOC levels have already flagged a developing issue.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>From detection to action<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cell Guard publishes its measurements and diagnostic flags as standard CAN frames, allowing a battery management system or safety PLC to react without the delay of proprietary interfacing. Its low side drive output can trigger the process that cuts the circuit to the pack, isolating affected cells and giving the system a chance to cool before a developing fault propagates further.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why minutes matter<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The value of an earlier warning is easy to state and easy to underestimate. Minutes of additional notice can be the difference between isolating a single faulty cell and losing an entire module or pack to propagation, and between a controlled shutdown and an incident that escalates beyond the point where onboard systems can contain it. For fleet operators and energy storage owners, that earlier window also has consequences beyond the immediate safety event, including reduced downtime, lower repair costs and a smaller impact on public confidence in the technology.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Relevant across chemistries and applications<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This early detection window matters for NMC and LFP chemistries alike, even though the two fail in different ways, and it applies equally to first life electric vehicle packs and second life static energy storage systems built from repurposed EV batteries. In every case, the value of catching battery thermal runaway minutes earlier is the same: more time to isolate the problem before it becomes a much larger one.<\/p>\n<p>Second life systems raise the stakes for early detection in a particular way. Batteries repurposed from electric vehicles into static energy storage systems carry a history of use that is not always fully known, which makes a proactive, sensor led safety layer even more valuable than it would be for a pack with a single, well documented life cycle from new.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Building the case with data<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cell Guard&#8217;s continuous logging of VOCs, pressure, humidity, dew point and shock also has value beyond the moment of an actual thermal event.
